Autoimmune disease is a collective term that includes roughly 100 known diseases. Some of the more well-known ones include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis (MS), scleroderma, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, Hashimoto’s disease, Celiac’s, Crohn’s disease and type 1 diabetes.
Autoimmune disease rates have increased sharply over the last 15 years and collectively is the #1 killer of North American women under the age of 65
Each autoimmune condition presents different symptoms, depending on what type it is and which areas of the body it affects. This makes it very difficult to detect what’s really going on and even harder to manage.
All autoimmune diseases share one thing in common – in all cases the immune system becomes unbalanced and attacks the body.
While the exact mechanisms and causes remain somewhat elusive, we have identified some common underlying themes. I call these the “5 Root Causes of ALL Autoimmune Disease”.

The 5 Root Causes of Autoimmune Disease Are
- Poor digestion and leaky gut
- Poor dietary choices
- Food allergies and sensitivities
- Stress and trauma
- Gut infections – bacteria, viruses, Candida and/or Parasites
Autoimmune diseases are very complex conditions with many moving parts. This makes it difficult to manage and treat. Unfortunately, most medical treatment is focused on managing the symptoms while largely ignoring underlying causes.
This is a sad story I often hear in my clinic; many of my clients are frustrated, disillusioned and have given up by the time I see them.
The truth of the matter is that there is so much that can be done to manage and, in many cases, reverse autoimmune disease altogether. How do I know? I have personally helped 100’s of people in my practice.
Autoimmune disease is an area I specialize in
Functional medicine tests can uncover many underlying factors that drive autoimmune. These include (but are not limited to)
- Food allergy and sensitivity testing
- GI Map Stool Test
- GI Effects Stool Testing
- Gut infections
- Adrenal stress tests
- Intestinal immune function
- Inflammation testing
- Autoimmune antibody testing and monitoring
Personalized functional medicine and lifestyle programs can then integrate the necessary dietary and lifestyle changes along with customized supplementation to restore proper gut health, balance your immune system, help you to become less reactive, and control flare-ups
